There are many companies who offer domain name registration services. If
you don't have a registered domain name yet, but have one in

to see if the name you want is available. If you have never selected a domain name before, then watch out for a few things;

Trying to save a few dollars per year by using some lesser known company is not worth it. Better known companies are simply a better place to ensure your domain remains safe and your own.

Try and select more than one domain name - and choose names (if they aren't already taken) that relate to the business category your in. This has been shown to help somewhat in search engine rank.

THEY will be the ones who own it - not you!
The same goes for your hosting account.

Website hosting companies exist to provide
a connection between your website files, new email accounts that include your domain name, your ISP (for the email you may choose to send from your site to an email program). You will also gain your own secure web mail account (with a good hosting company). Regarding your actual web files; with any hosting company, once your website
files are tested and complete, they are uploaded onto a "server" computer that is connected to the actual
Internet "backbone". File uploading is typically accomplished
using method called FTP (File Transfer
Protocol). Once this done, your website
design will go "live" in a matter of hours, and can be
viewed on a browser by simply typing in your domain name (i.e., www.whateveraddress.com or just, "whateveraddress.com").
Unfortunately, hosting
services and their features and reliability vary greatly.
A novice therefore needs assistance in order to understand
the relationship between a host's reputation, monthly fees
and included features. Another issue to consider is the
potential future growth of your web site, whether it is built with database connections, and how moving to a new host may impact you. Typically, if the host company is closer to the Internet "backbone", this implies a better company and can help your search engine rankings. It may cost $10-$12/month for a good hosting company, but it's worth it.
On the other side of hosting track, there are a lot
of companies offering cheaper rates. However, a cheap
hosting company is one who typically does not maintain their server
computers well enough, and may carry a high ratio of email spammer
and porn site accounts. This all translates into greater
potential for down time (which affects search engine rank and increases the likelihood of email spam). In the worst case, a hosting company with "poor clientele" can result in your website being banned - all because of the actions of only a few domain accounts. So beware!
